Kingswood College has been awarded International Green Flag Eco-School status. This brings to a head a six-year process in which the school has put into place a host of enviro-friendly policies. The special flag will be handed over to the school at a ceremony later this year.

The assessment team said of Kingswood's portfolio, submitted in late 2011, It is a great portfolio that shows an enthusiastic commitment to positive environmental change, both in theory and practice, through learning which is entrenched in school processes.

There is clearly a deliberate shift towards changing minds and habits for a more sustainable livelihood. We commend Kingswood College for always championing the environmental cause. The school is sending a clear message to the whole world that we all have a responsibility to save our planet Earth.

The Eco-Schools Programme was launched in South Africa in 2003. It is supported by World Wildlife Fund SA and the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa), endorsed by the Department of Education and funded by Pareto, Nedbank Green Trust and other partner organisations. Currently, there are almost 1 200 schools registered with the programme.

Eco-Schools is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) (www.fee-international.org) that started in Europe in 1994. It has been specially adapted for use in Africa. About 9 000 schools have earned green Eco-School flags in 51 countries around the world. More than 30 000 schools are registered with the programme, globally, with approximately 9 million students and 628 000 teachers involved.
Kingswood Junior School first achieved Green Flag status in March 2008, followed by the Senior School in December 2008. The International Green Flag is awarded to the College as a whole.
