Infrastructure that's falling apart and new connections for new buildings are the reason for an unusually high number of holes that have recently appeared in the streets of Grahamstown.
That's according to Luthando Mashiya, of the municipality's engineering department.
For example, he said, the water pipes on Ilchester Road and York Street were in danger of bursting.
"The pipes are mostly asbestos pipes and we replace them with PVC pipes, which are plastic," he said, explaining that asbestos pipes often burst because they couldn't take the pressure of the water.
In streets such as Huntly and African, on the other hand, the water pipes had to be connected to new residential developments.
Mashiya said the hole in African Street should be covered by today or tomorrow and they were waiting for material to arrive, in order to fit a bigger pipe on Huntly Street.
