Fire has ravaged yet another Hooggenoeg house in the same street that saw a house burn down just a few weeks ago. The home of the Marks family on Fifth Avenue caught alight on Thursday afternoon, but fortunately neighbours who saw the blaze came to help salvage some of the family's belongings.

Owner of the house, Ragel Drayer was in tears after losing almost all of her possessions, but said she was relieved that most of her furniture was saved by people in her neighbourhood who helped her to move things out of her RDP house. Her TV, fridge, bed and chairs were saved from the fire.

When Grocott's Mail went to the house, fire fighters had not yet arrived. One of Drayer's neighbours, Erinay Norjie said that she became aware of the fire when she heard children screaming outside. “I saw smoke coming out of the roof of the house, and other residents were trying to put out the flames,” said Norjie.

Shevandria Bruintjies, who lives behind the Marks's property, said neighbours tried to get the fire under control to stop it from spreading to other houses. “I tried my best to put out the flames,” she said.
It appeared that the fire started in the shack which is attached to the main house. “There's nothing left in my son's room, who lives at the back of the house,” Drayer said. Her son, Johannes Marks, was at work when the fire started.

A police officer who came to the scene suspected that the fire was started by the electrical box.
