Karateka from the Joza Karate Club excelled at the East Cape Shotokan-Ryu and Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Championships which took place at the university recently.

A total of 15 members represented Joza Karate Club and they won 19 medals between them. “This was our fourth major championship this year and in all the championships we participated in, our members did very well,” said Mzwandile Matebese, instructor at Joza Karate Club.

Matebese said he hopes the side will improve next year. “I can see that my students are starting to like this kind of sport,” he added. Matebese also thanked the sponsors who contributed to the club's success, the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the Makana Municipality.

Matebese urged children in the township, “to come and be part of this sport and stay away from trouble – things like crime and drugs.” The Joza Karate Club is based in the Extension 9 community hall where members train each Monday and Thursday from 5pm to 6pm.
