Mary Waters High School pupil Vuyani Skeyi has been selected to play for the Eastern Province U17s, after impressing the selectors at age-group soccer trials in Butterworth last month.

Skeyi, known as Mpongo by his teammates and peers, said his biggest dream was to play overseas, or in the PSL and represent South Africa at some level.

Born in Grahamstown, Skeyi started playing football at the age of 11, playing for the junior teams of the local Chelsea Soccer Club. He later moved to Mighty Chiefs, for whom he still plays today, under coach Anga Ncebetsha.

The young footballer has helped his club win silverware in various local tournaments. Ncebetsha said: "He is a very good boy, who fights for the team. I would not trade him for anything. I would love to see him grow and become a better footballer, as he is doing very well in all departments on the field." Ncebetsha said representing the province was a big achievement for the youngster.

The Mighty Chiefs U17 side were the league champions in the 2009-2010 season, but lost the 2010-2011 league to Love and Peace. Skeyi is looking forward to help his team to put the title "back where it belongs".

On last month's soccer tour to Butterworth, Skeyi was part of the U17 squad that represented Makana. Skeyi went on to score in both the side's matches.

He thanked Ncebetsha for supporting him and my brother who was there for me when I went to trials – "not forgetting my teammates who [lent]me the soccer boots".

The EP U17 side is scheduled to play in an interprovincial tournament in December, at a venue still to be announced.
