More than 50 donkey carts are expected to take part in the 16th annual Donkey Carnival tomorrow. Organiser Annerie Wolmarans said there would also be a competition for dogs. Their owners would be given food and collars on their pets' behalf, and the SPCA would come and give them the necessary injections.

Last year's Donkey Carnival winners were:

    1st prize: Grocott's Mail

    2nd prize: Foto First

    3rd prize: Grahamstown Funeral Services

"I would like to thank all the sponsors," said Wolmarans. "I know times are very hard and I really appreciate your assistance."

The community is invited to join the festivities at Fiddler's Green from midday, when the prizegiving will take place, or to watch the carnival procession on the road from the Chan-Henry store on Dr Jacob Zuma Drive (Raglan Road) towards town.

The Traffic Department will be on hand to help control traffic during the procession.

"Our donkey community is from the poorest of the poor and we want to make that day very special for them," Wolmarans said. "Thank you for your support."
