The death of Rhodes first-year student, Matthew O'Brien, whose body was discovered on Wednesday afternoon at Goldfields Residence, appeared to be suicide. Fellow students and staff are shocked and distraught.

Friends suspected something was wrong when Matthew missed classes and they hadn't seen him the whole day. After he failed to answer his door when they knocked, they became concerned and obtained a master key to get into his room.

When Grocott's Mail visited the residence, fellow students told reporters that one of Matthew's close friends, who found him, was so affected by the incident that he had been unable to give a police statement. Matthew reportedly left a letter detailing why he intended to take his life.

Deputy Dean of Students, Roger Adams sent out a press release yesterday afternoon, saying, "We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends."
