The Makana electricity department have been told to do an urgent audit of non-operational street lights, after dozens of complaints from ratepayers.

Councillor Pierre Ranchhod, at Thursdays infrastructural committee meeting, said that, for example, the street lights in his area alone had been out for three weeks.

“Crime is being committed in this city. I am frustrated about this,” Ranchhod said.

The committee’s chairperson, Councillor Nomhle Gaga, said there should be a plan to address this problem with the service to which people were entitled.

Ranchhod proposed, “as a matter of urgency" that two people from the department should travel throughout Makana and record where the street lights were out. He said this should be followed by the required maintenance and repair work.

Councillor Brian Fargher, who raised the concern, said a proper system needed to be put in place to follow up on complaints.
