A Hi-Tec Security armed response officer narrowly escaped injury or possibly even death over the weekend when an armed robber pointed a firearm at him from close range, but the weapon jammed when fired.
Hi-Tec spokesman Derek Richardson explained that armed response officers Sindile Makana and Nthabeli Mpyiani had responded after a panic button was activated at Foreman’s Tavern in Grahamstown East in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Upon arrival the officers were informed that a suspect was inside the premises with the tavern owner, and that he was in possession of the client’s firearm,” said Richardson.

The officers secured the premises.

After a while the alleged armed robber left the tavern, holding the owner by the collar, but was taken aback at the presence of Hi-Tec. He pushed the owner forward, dropped the tavern keys and attempted to flee.
Security officer, Mpyiani, fired a warning shot and his colleague, Makana, chased the suspect into a shed on the property. “The armed suspect then turned on Makana, pointed the firearm at the security officer and tried to fire off a shot, but luckily the gun jammed,” said Richardson.

Richardson added: “Makana bravely arrested the man and handed him over to the police who had arrived at the scene. The officers did a brilliant job, keeping their cool under extreme pressure.”
Richardson said a large knife, a cellphone and the client’s firearm were recovered.
