The school won the vegetable production category of the competition on Thursday 1 September and will now go onto represent Cacadu at the provincial competition in Tsolo at the end of the month.
An award ceremony was held in Riebeeck East on Friday to commemorate their achievements. Representatives from the Departments of Agriculture, Education, Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, and the Umthathi Training Project were present. Parents as well as staff and pupils from C M Vellem, DD Siwisa and Archie Mbolekwa primary schools also attended.
The choir of the Riebeeck East school performed and the Grahamstown sub-district co-ordinator Zama Zikhali spoke about the importance of the day.
“We support every activity that is dealing with social economy,” he said. Zikhali also thanked Umthathi for encouraging schools to cultivating their yards.
Environmental Development Officer from the Education Department, Nomathamsanqa Mxothwa, said it wasn't the size of a school that counted, but what it yielded.
“Riebeeck East Combined School is the smallest in the Cacadu district and it produces good leaders,” said Mxothwa.
