Grahamstown mountain biker Jason Meaton is poised to challenge the title in a prestigious national off-road series after last weekend's MTN National Mountain Bike Series event.

Saturday's Gravel Travel 70km marathon was the sixth in the national series which sees South Africa's top mountain bikers in action.

Meaton is part of the senior men's category and has now moved up to second spot overall.

Before Saturday's event, Meaton was standing at fifth position in his section, but was then able to move up three positions.

He attributes this to the fact that he had three months to prepare for this event, since the fifth race of the series which was held in May.

Meaton has taken part in a number of mountain bike events as part of his preparations, including winning the Pineapple Mountain Bike Endurance 63km a week before the national event.

In Saturday's event, Meaton finished eighth overall and fifth in his category, with over 300 riders in the race.
