Makana Municipality has lifted the veil of secrecy on the criminal charges faced by traffic officer Terence Bafo, by confirming that the charges were preceded by an internal disciplinary hearing.
Makana spokesperson Thandy Matebese confirmed this week that the municipality was aware of Bafo's imminent appearance in the magistrate's court for allegedly committing a traffic offence. "Any disciplinary issues between the employer and employee are treated confidentially and therefore we'll exercise our right not to respond to some of your questions," said Matebese. "However, I can confirm that the municipality is aware of the criminal charges against Mr Bafo and there has been an internal disciplinary process."
Bafo is due to appear in court on 5 September, but his charge sheet does not show the details of the allegations against him. Matebese said Bafo was still employed by the municipality.
A source in the municipality said Bafo's charges stemmed from an internal disciplinary process. "He was charged with issuing a fraudulent learner's license a couple of months ago, but was later found not guilty when the process was concluded," said the source. It was disappointing, rather than surprising, when we heard that the traffic department had laid criminal charges against him."
Bafo refused to comment on the matter, saying he was on leave.
