The Cathedral bells will be rung tomorrow at 11am to celebrate the fact that Settlers' Dam is overflowing – something that only a few months ago seemed impossible.

In so, doing the Cathedral will be following a long tradition of ringing church bells at times of celebration, as well as of danger.

In the 1970s, the Cathedral bells were rung to celebrate Settlers' overflowing at the end of a long and crippling drought.

The Dean at the time wished to make the point that churches were full during droughts, when we were asked to pray for rain – but too often we forgot to give thanks when the rains came.

Dean Andrew Hunter will be continuing that tradition this Saturday.
