Four Grahamstown school pupils and their horses are off to Johannesburg in August to represent Eastern Cape Schools at what has been billed as the “biggest horse show in the country”.

Megan du Preez from Kingswood Junior School, riding Rocky II, Justine Greeff from Kingswood College, riding Samurai, Nicholas Greeff from St Andrew's College, riding Phoenix, and Bridget Ford from DSG riding Silvern Star, have all qualified to represent the Eastern Cape Equestrian Team at the South African National Equestrian Schools Association national event.

Genevié Groenewald from Port Alfred High School has also made the team.

Eastern Cape’s Sanesa chairperson Glynis Fuller said to qualify for the massive multi-disciplinary national competition, riders needed to compete in two out of four qualifiers during the course of the year.

Their best scores from the qualifiers were combined with the scores they achieved at the Regional Finals. “If they qualify they get to represent the Eastern Cape Schools Equestrian Team at Nationals in Johannesburg from 6 to 9 August, where they compete against all the other provinces. It is the biggest show in the country,” said Fuller.

The massive three-day multi-disciplinary equestrian event last year attracted more than 1 000 horses and ponies and 3 200 entries from all over the country. A total of 21 teams represented their provinces in the event. The Grahamstown Riding Club is proud of its young members and wishes them everything of the best for the show, said the club’s Adrienne Plasket.
