The body of an unidentified, homeless man was found on the morning of Friday 10 June, outside the Department of Sport Recreation Arts and Culture building on the corner of Milner and Grant Streets.
A security guard on duty at the building found the body and called HiTech Security, who came to the scene and alerted the police at 7.15am after confirming that the man was dead.
HiTech Security guard, Kenny Knoetze, said that this man had been known to sleep at this particular spot, depending on the weather. The man's body was found face-down in a gutter alongside the building, about ten metres away from his clothes and blanket, said Knoetze.
According to the Grahamstown SAPS, the man was around 60 years of age. On the previous night temperatures dipped below 10 degrees and it had been raining, and police officers at the scene suspected that the man had died of natural causes. Captain Mali Govender of the Grahamstown SAPS said that several similar deaths were also reported in the past week, and most were due to the weather.
