A Rhodes student was killed in a car crash near Bathurst on Sunday night. Second-year humanities student, Anja Jooste, from Pietermaritzburg, was killed instantly when the car she and her friends were travelling in overturned on a corner near the giant pineapple around 10pm.

Friends not involved in the accident, who didn't want to be named, told Grocott's Mail yesterday that a Grahamstown resident who had also been in the car died yesterday, after spending the night in a coma in a Port Elizabeth hospital.

The friends were returning to Grahamstown from Port Alfred. A statement by Professor Vivian de Klerk, Dean of Students at Rhodes University read, " The University regrets to announce that Anja (Ajaya) Jooste, a second-year Humanities student from Pietermaritzburg, was tragically killed in a car in a car accident on Sunday evening, while travelling back to Grahamstown from Port Alfred. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. We extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends."

Grahamstown Police Spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, said a case of culpable homicide and drunk driving had been opened. Govender was unable to comment on the state of the other occupants, except to say that some had escaped with minor injuries.
