The company is proudly owned by Clint and Wiebke Welgemoed. Clint used to own a construction company in Johannesburg but decided to abandon his job in order to pursue his love for fish. He left the big city and moved to Grahamstown in order to study Ichthyology at Rhodes University. After returning from an Ichthyology Honours class trip to an aquaculture farm, Clint was struck with the idea of running a seafood business.
“Being great seafood lovers, my wife and I were surprised to find there was not much seafood available in Grahamstown, especially being relatively close to the coast,” Clint says.
In the beginning Clint decided to open the company as an online delivery system as a good way to test the market, without having the large expense of opening a shop. He believed it would be something different in Grahamstown and also convenient for customers.
The seafood is sourced from suppliers in Kwazulu-Natal, the Eastern and Western Cape. Clint says, “We deal with about 20 different suppliers. These include commercial fishermen, aquaculture farms, fishing companies, seafood importers and seafood traders.”
The company stocks both fresh and frozen seafood. Clint says, “We have up to 15 different species of fresh fish, live oysters and mussels, various smoked fish, different prawn and calamari products, different types of bait, fresh pâté, battered fish products and more. We stock over 50 different seafood items.”
The market for seafood is still small as there was not much seafood available in the past. Clint believes that one way of growing the market is by educating people on how to prepare seafood. “We give out free advice on cooking and free recipes.”
Deliveries take place every Friday. Orders can be made throughout the week until Thursday. However, if you desire any products from the Western Cape orders have to come in before Tuesday. Frozen seafood products are delivered from Monday to Friday.
For those who prefer the more conventional way of shopping, seafood is also available at the farmers' market on Somerset street in front of the Old Goal. On the first Saturday of each month, seafood is also sold at the Langeni Market at the golf course. As the weather grows colder in Grahamstown, take a break from the two-minute-noodles and try a pot of Durban crab curry.
