A Grahamstown cultural activist who included contact details for Makana Municipality on his business card said it had not been his intention to imply that the municipality endorsed his projects.

A Grahamstown cultural activist who included contact details for Makana Municipality on his business card said it had not been his intention to imply that the municipality endorsed his projects.

On Tuesday Makana Municipality published a notice in Grocott's Mail announcing that its details had been printed on the business card of the CEO of Isizwe Cultural Group, Sizwe Mda, without its consent. The notice read: "The Municipality therefore distances itself from unlawful practices and will not be held liable for any transaction whatsoever that may result from the unlawful use of the municipality's details."

Mda told Grocott's Mail that he had made a proposal to the municipality last year to develop significant heritage sites in Fingo Village into tourist destinations that would economically benefit not only Grahamstown, but the region as a whole.

Mda said he had explained to the municipality his reasons for printing the municipality's details on his business card, and that his intentions had not been unlawful.

"I was not binding them into any contract, I was just displaying my plans," he said.

He said he had only showed the business cards to the municipality and had not distributed them. Makana Municipal Spokesperson Thandy Matebese said Mda had admitted to using the municipality's name without any authorisation and had apologised even before the municipality published the notice.
