John Porter, who died of a heart attack last Tuesday was a prominent attorney at the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court.

Born in Durban on 1 July 1964, his twins, Mark and Emma, were born on 2 July 2005, so they came as a belated birthday present. Porter studied law at Rhodes and returned to university in 2001 to further his studies, soon after marrying his wife, Karen.

She said he enjoyed driving, usually taking the back roads that he always termed, "the scenic route". Porter was a keen member of the Rotary Club of Grahamstown, and focused particularly on his charity work with children.

His colleague, Koch Froneman, remembers him as "a gentleman – friendly, professional, and a good attorney". He fondly recalls seeing Porter cross the street from the court to his bakkie, still wearing his black billowing robe, saying that he "looked like an over-sized Batman" because of his generous proportions.

"John was a very good person who helped a lot of people," said Karen, and "he will be missed by family and friends". His memorial service will be at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hill Street today at 3pm.
