A family in Mthatha is in double grief after a father and daughter were killed in separate incidents on Monday and Tuesday. Phakamile Mamba was shot and killed in a rain of bullets outside his home at Zimane Village near Mthatha, and his daughter Sihle was killed in a car accident outside Grahamstown.

According to the Daily Dispatch, Sihle Mamba was on her to Uitenhage to tell her mother, who was visiting relatives, that her father had been shot dead by unknown assailants in his driveway on Monday night.

Grahamstown Police Spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the police received a report of an accident 41 kilometres outside Grahamstown on Tuesday morning. "A case of culpable homicide has been opened," said Govender.

Govender said the police are not sure how the accident happened as there was only one vehicle involved, but the vehicle had been travelling from Mthatha in the direction of Port Elizabeth. The three other occupants of the vehicle were admitted to Settlers Hospital.

Mamba, the leader of the Zimbane Development Trust, played an integral role in the controversial land claim in King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality (KSD). The community of Zimbane laid a claim to land within the Mthatha CBD which included the newly built stadium and an upmarket area near Walter Sisulu University (Unitra).

The claim led to some development projects being stalled including a shopping centre close to what used to be a ministerial complex before 1994.
