The new salaries of Makana Municipality's directors will see Municipal Manager Ntombi Baart earning a whopping R1,12million per annum following an 8,48% increase which was approved by the council at the end of last month.

The new salaries of Makana Municipality's directors will see Municipal Manager Ntombi Baart earning a whopping R1,12million per annum following an 8,48% increase which was approved by the council at the end of last month.

The increase was approved by the council at a special meeting which was held behind closed doors and is in line with the South African Local Government Association's (Salga) general salary increment for municipal employees.

This will not adversely affect the municipality's service delivery as Makana Municipality's budget had made a provision for a 9,5% increase. The increase is also endorsed by the council's remuneration committee which comprises of Human Resources Manager Moses Bodlani and councillors Zamuxolo Peter, Julie Wells and Luyanda Nase.

The committee was established in July to assist mayor Vumile Lwana in determining the payment of senior officials. The committee is responsible for determining policy guidelines in annual salary increments, payment of performance bonuses and the review of salary packages for directors.

However, for the 2010/11 financial year the directors' increases will be determined by their performance contract which stipulates that increment shall be determined by Salga. The committee is accountable to Lwana through his mayoral committee.

The annual increase will see Baart taking home a basic salary of R830 388, a travelling allowance of R140 040, a telephone allowance of R13 284 and a bonus of R137 720. Her total package will cost the municipality R1,121 432. Meanwhile, the municipality's five directors will each earn a basic salary of R627 300, R119 500 travelling allowance, R9 972 telephone allowance and a bonus of R105 951. Each director will cost the municipality R862 723.

However, Makana spokesperson Thandy Matebese told Grocott's Mail that the salary increase for directors is 8% and that it will be backdated to 1 July 2010. Matebese confirmed though that Salga has determined the general increase for other municipal employees to be 8,48%.
