For the first time in over 15 years, Grahamstown boxing enthusiasts will have the chance to watch professional boxing, when some of the top provincial boxers clash in a big fight night on 27 November.
Zulu Sports Production in conjunction with the Eastern Cape's Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the Makana Municipality is presenting, among other fights, the Eastern Cape lightweight title fight over ten rounds.
Local boxing club manager Mfuzo Dyira said locals “have not seen professional boxing in 15 years,” in Grahamstown. The last time professional boxing was staged in Grahamstown was when Ramie Xonxa was a boxing promoter.
On the chances of the local boxers, Dyira said they are “not sure about our opposition from East London/Mdantsane, but one thing for sure is, we'll give them good run for their money.” Four local boxers will be among the action, including Mzoxolo Ndwayana, Masonwabe Mgcuwe and Mtwekhaya Makhombe. Makhombe and Mgcuwe are managed by Mfuzo Dyira while Ndwayana is managed by Albert Kotyi.
There will be a total of 11 fights with the first one beginning at 2pm at the City Hall in High Street. Tickets cost R20 for adults and R10 for children.
