National students’ football comes to town

With 2010 being the 'football year', Rhodes Sport will close the year by hosting the University Sport South Africa Football National Club Championships from 6 to 10 December.

With 2010 being the 'football year', Rhodes Sport will close the year by hosting the University Sport South Africa Football National Club Championships from 6 to 10 December.

Tertiary institutions from eight provinces will compete in the tournament. The teams will be divided into 16 teams of men and 16 teams of women. These institutions are considered the best in their provinces, having qualified for the tournament by finishing in the top three in their provincial leagues.

Grahamstonians will be treated to some of the best student football on offer in the tournament, which is considered the biggest event of the year in students' football calendar. Many students will use this as a stepping stone to greater heights.

The following institutions have already booked their tickets to the tournament: Eastern Cape: Rhodes University (men and women), Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (men and women), University of Fort Hare (men and women), Walter Sisulu University – Umthatha (men), Walter Sisulu University – Ibika (women) Western Cape: Cape Peninsula University of Technology (men and women), University of the Western Cape (women), Northlink College (men) KwaZulu-Natal: University of KwaZulu-Natal – Pietermaritzburg (men), University of Zululand (men), University of KwaZulu-Natal – Westville (women), Durban University of Technology – Durban (women) Free State: Central University of Technology (men), University of Free State (women) Gauteng: University of Johannesburg (men and women), University of Pretoria (men and women), Tshwane University of Technology – Soshanguvhe (men), Tshwane University of Technology – Pretoria (women), Vaal University of Technology (women) Limpopo: University of Limpopo (men), University of Venda (women) North West: North West University – Mafikeng (men), North West University – Potchefstroom (men & women) Mpumalanga: Tshwane University of Technology – Nelspruit (women); Tshwane University of Technology – Emalahleni (men).

Matches are scheduled to take place on Prospect Fields, King Field, Great Field (Rhodes University), and DSG sports field (opposite Great Field).
