Makana Mayor, Vumile Lwana showed his compassion for senior citizens by hosting an event especially in their honour on Thursday. This annual celebration is open to all members of all the senior citizen centres in the Makana area.

Councillor Ngeleza welcomed the guests and said, "This day is important to us to have all the elderly people of Makana here at once, enjoying themselves, which is why the Office of the Mayor said that a day should be put aside to celebrate you."

At the event, a biblical reference about the importance of the elderly spoke about what people must do to receive eternal life. The answer was simply to love your God with all your heart and to also love your neighbour. This thought taken from the scriptures emphasised that people must go beyond only attending church but also be care givers to the people of God, which is why this event is important to the Office of the Mayor.

Councillor Julia Wells said it was a privilege to invite the senior citizens every year to this event. "We draw our strength from you to carry on our tasks." Wells continued to say that they appreciate that the elderly are living libraries to us and that there would be no community without them.

"You are the people who know where we come from and where we are going," she said. McKaiser's Old Age Home resident Stephanie Taylor said she was thankful to receive an invitation to spend an afternoon with the Mayor. "I feel happy that we can come out for the day, just even to forget our illnesses for a little while," said another resident from McKaiser's Old Age Home.
