Just four days after the start of renovations to the old tennis court in ward 11, a number of poles have been stolen from the property. Ward 11 residents were shocked to wake up on Friday morning to find that the newly installed poles at the tennis court just behind Recreation Hall had been lopped off.

Kevin Bates of Makana's Parks and Recreation Board said that he informed Ward 11 councillor, Lena May about the incident and that a police case has also been opened. Bates added that the municipality would replace the poles.

May said that they had just held a community meeting the night before to discuss, among other items, the progress of restoring the old tennis court. "When we got the call that the poles were stolen, I was really down," she said. May said that the renovations started last week Monday when some poles were erected at the tennis court.

According to May, the restoration of the court is important to the community mainly for youth upliftment as the community planned to use the facility not only for tennis, but volleyball and other recreational activities. This would be made available to the youth on a daily basis where they can utilise their free time constructively which would lower the crime rate in the area.

May said that they also have plans to work with the police to interact with the youth in sports day events held at the facility. She explained that this would help build a better relationship between the police and the youth.

She added that she has informed the community to alert her if they have any information about the theft. "We need a temporary structure for someone to stay there in order to prevent vandalism," May added. She said that she would inform the municipality about this proposal.
