Police are still investigating the case of a dead baby who was discovered in a rubbish bin near the entrance of the Public Library in Hill Street on 15 July last year.
According to last year's report the male infant who was wearing a nappy was discovered by a library official, in a plastic bag wrapped in two grey blankets. On the scene no one was able to identify the baby; according to the then Grahamstown SAPS spokesperson Ndivelafi Mamuthubi, the mother of the baby was not known.
According to last year's report, a few minutes into the investigation, the Department of Health's forensic pathology services arrived at the scene and loaded the body into the van. Mamuthubi also said, "There are no certainties to what led to the baby's death and that it's up to the forensic experts to investigate.
Current Grahamstown SAPS spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said: "The baby girl, less than a month old, was discovered by a car guard guy next to the library. A murder case is still under investigation and it is suspected that the mother of the baby could be from the outskirts of Grahamstown. An investigation was done in hospitals and clinics but a link to the mother could not be found."
Govender added that the police cannot yet release the results that came back from DNA sample tests which were carried out in Cape Town. "The results are part of our investigation, they could only be released in court. I'm appealing to the community for information on the incident, they can contact Detective Warrant officer John Manzana on 082 779 7117."
