Masixole Kobese, known as Masi, who is in Grade 12 at Graeme College, is an up-and-coming R&B artist. Grocott's Mail reporter Khanyiso Tshwaku sat down for a chat with this muso of the now generation.

When did you start singing?

I started singing when I was 11. I was in a group for about two years. After that I went solo. I wanted to grow as an artist and the group I was in did not produce the kind of music that I connected to.

What and who inspired you to sing?

I have always had a love for music. I can't say specifically who has inspired me, but I look up to the likes of Brian McKnight, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Boyz 2 Men. They have all inspired me.

Who produces your music and who do you work with?

I work with Corinne Cooper from Sonic Art Studio and I have lots of other people I work with in terms of back up.

When did you first produce an album and how much work went into it?

I first produced an album in 2007. It was a demo and it was three weeks worth of work.

What kind of criticism did it receive?

The criticism was not good, but I have to admit that the production needed more work.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on my first album, which is nearing completion. It is self-titled.

How have you gone about promoting the album?

I performed at the City Hall quite recently to promote the album and there are other promotions in the pipeline.

So then what are your future plans in terms of being in the music industry?

I'd like to work with developing artists and to be become a songwriter.
