Local textile artist Karen Wentworth, who had two works accepted for last years’s Sanlam Vuleka National Art Competition, is to hold an exhibition of her work in Grahamstown. Her vibrant textile artworks often explore inner journeys.
“My work is about acknowledgement and expression of our human thoughts and feelings,” she says. “I think art bridges gaps between people.
My hope is that others will recognise the emotion expressed, leading to a sense of being understood by and less alienated from others.
“We really are more alike than we are different. Textiles are a wonderful medium; they’re both tactile and versatile,” she says.
“There are so many ways to dye, alter and combine fabrics and more recently, I’ve been exploring sculpting with them.”
Over 35 works will be on display. Four of the pieces have recently returned from being exhibited at the Fibreworks exhibition in Cape Town.
Previously, three other works were accepted for the Innovative Threads exhibitions in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
The exhibition runs on Saturday 2 October and Sunday 3 October from 9am to 5pm at the Carinus Art School. All are welcome. Phone 072 299 8230 for enquiries.
