Badminton veteran, Essie Pienaar, recently represented the Eastern Province at the South African Grandmasters Championships held in Pietermaritzburg.

The EP side came up against five other provinces in the B section of the tournament, playing against Gauteng, Northern Cape, Natal Country districts, Southern Cape and an invitational team.

The EP side went on to win all their games, which sees the EP side being promoted to the A section of the national tournament.

Pienaar was graded number three at the  tournament, while another EP member was graded one. The EP men were graded one, two and three.

Pienaar thanked all the businesses who sponsored her for the SA champs trip. As a badminton player for the past 38 years, Pienaar has represented EP since 1994 in the veteran, masters and now the grand masters section.

She is a member of the Rhodes University Badminton Club, which is an open club, and urges anyone interested in playing the game or joining the club to contact her on 072 428 5111.
