With Heritage Day celebrated across the country, Grahamstown sportsmen have also got involved in organising a local sporting event to coincide with Heritage Day.

The Heritage Cup originally consisted of soccer, rugby and netball. While netball was focused on the primary schools, the netball section was cancelled due to the recent teachers strike.

The soccer section has seen the local Makana Football League and Cacadu Football League teams playing for the cup.

Semi-finals took place over the past weekend and the finals, scheduled to  be played last night (at the time of going to print) saw Grahamstown’s two top sides and both members of the Cacadu soccer league Grocott’s Mail Eleven Attackers face Phoenix Pioneers at JD Dlepu Stadium.

In the rugby section of the Heritage Cup competition, one semi-final game took place over the past weekend, with Eastern beating Lily White 24-10 and booking their place into the final.

The second semi final was  scheduled to take place last night and the winner of the match between Brumbies and Old Collegians will face Easterns on Friday.

A number of matches are scheduled to take place at Miki Yili Stadium tomorrow. The opening game will see Archie Mbolekwa U15s coming up against Ntaba Maria at 10.30am.

This will be followed at 11.30am by Swallows and Universals 1sts. Winter Rose and Lily White 1sts will meet at 12.30pm as the curtain raiser to the Heritage Cup rugby finals between Easterns and the winner of Wednesday’s match.
