Makana Amateur Boxing Organisation (Makabo) junior boxers took part in the Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisation (Ecabo) provincial boxing trials in Port St Johns recently. Ten Makabo boxers who had been selected from Cacadu district trials in Port Alfred, took to Port St Johns and along with selected boxers
from Ndlambe, they made up the Cacadu team that went head on with other teamsfrom the nine districts of the province.

Two boxers fought their way to the finals, where they lost to their opponents, while three lost their fights in the semi-final rounds.

With two silver medals and three bronze medals, a total of five medals from Makana boxers put the local team in fourth position, following Amathole (22), OR Tambo (14) and Nelson Mandela Metro (8).

Last year, the level of performance was poor, as the boxers were  placed sixth in the medal standing. Makabo president and coach, Bulelani Ndwayana says, “It wasn’t easy but we managed to have five of our boxers going through, some were beaten in the early rounds because of the high level of boxing. In previous times we never had any junior boxers succeeding to the next stages but now there seems to have been a difference.”

The ECABO team will attend a training camp in East London before they head to Cape Town to compete in the SA Games from the first week of October.

“We had a problem with some boxers who were not allowed by their parents to join us in the trip as they think that the sport is dangerous. When parents take their children out of sport, then there will be negative activities that will be there to replace the sport,” said Ndwayana.

The coach believes that sport works closely with education and the future of the youth and that parents should encourage them to join sports.

Finalists:
Sindiso Qinela lost to AndileTanzi of OR Tambo (antweight)
Ayanda Lotheni lost to
Thando Mlamla of Amathole
(extraheavyweight)
Semi finalists:
Anesipho Klaas lost to Anele
Mtshila of Amathole (middleweight)
Siphosethu Magadaza lost to
Onke Mayeliso of Amathole
(spiderweight)
Luvuyo Rodolo lost to Linda
