Smuts and Keeton are tennis champs

At the conclusion of the Bathurst and District Lawn Tennis Association championships, Di Smuts of Southwell Tennis Club and Hilton Keeton of Salem Tennis Club were the respective women’s and men’s singles winners. The championships were held after the league and took place over two weekends, with the finals being held at the Kenton tennis club on 28 August. The champs were followed by a prizegiving  ceremony where a number of awards were made. The most improved women’s player award went to Chrystelle Hutchinson (Grahamstown Tennis Club), while Kevin Zimmerman of Salem was named the Most improved man. The service to tennis award went to Sheryl Luden (Sevenfountains) and the Sportmanship award went to Glynn Dixon (Coombs) and Mike Fuller (Kenton).

The winners were:
Women’s singles winner: A
league – Di Smuts (Southwell)
B league – Sarah Oberholzer (Shaw Park).
Women’s singles runner up: A league – Kierryn Keeton
Salem) B league – Kyla Purdon
(Kenton).

Men’s singles winner: A
league Hilton Keeton (Salem)
B league – Chesney Long (Coombs).

Men’s singles runner-up:
A league – Andrew Marshall (Blaaukrantz) B league – Milo Mills (Gtown).

Women’s doubles winners: A
league – Shelley Holtzhausen
and Nan Austin (Kenton) B
league – Judy Harvey and
Michelle Pienaar (Shaw park)
C league – Averil Matthew and
Heather Ledwick (Kenton).
Women’s doubles runners
-up: A
league – Di Hornby and
Kathy Court (Southwell) B
league – Sunette Fronemann
and Chrystelle Hutchinson
(Gtown) C league – Deidre
Marais and Carol- Anne Austin
(Shaw Park).
Men’s doubles winners: A
league – Hilton Keeton and
Kevin Zimmerman (Salem) B
league – Gavin and Glynn Dixon
(Coombs) C league – Freddie
Bopp and Brett Atkinson
(SF).
