Students dressed the part when they attended last week’s Rhodes University Sports Personality gala event, as guests and nominees looked stunning in their formal outfits and make up.

The judges were looking for finalists with uniquely gifted qualities, who do not necessarily excel in sports but have a winning personality and natural leadership qualities.

The guest speaker at the event, Mzwandile Sticks encouraged the audience to always give 100% in everything they did and that there are always two choices in life.

“I chose to be a professional rugby player and went to play with Sharks,” he said. He admits that there are  challenges in the game because the coach was very strict, but he has never experienced any racism in rugby even though it is usually portrayed as a racist sport in South Africa.

The winner in the women’s category was Amy Jane Elkington who is a member of the Rhodes Hockey Club. The second finalist was Lianne Riley, a member of the athletics club and the third finalist was Roxy Reitz- a member of the squash club.

Elkington said it was “pretty cool to be finally acknowledged” as it is her fifth year at Rhodes. “It’s quite a surreal moment,” she said.

The winner in the men’s category was Anesu Chingono of the Rhodes Soccer Club. The second finalist was clubmate Shaun Zackery.

The third finalist was Jacques de Villiers of the squash club. Chigono said that it felt good to be recognised for his achievements especially this year as it has been the year of the Soccer World Cup. “I know they say feel it, it is gone. But I say feel it, it is here.”
