Some people go to psychologists when they have a problem, others go for a run and some hit the bottle. But there are those who seek the guidance of a psychic medium or clairvoyant.

These people are searching for spiritual guidance to solve their earthly problems. Trish Viera, a Grahamstown clairvoyant, maintains that spiritual guidance is the answer for those dealing with negative past issues, choosing a suitable life path and communicating with those “from the other side,” such as dead relatives.

“Each person has a guide,” Viera says. A guide is someone who once “walked the earth” but is now dead. The guide will send a message through the clairvoyant to communicate with the person seeking guidance.

The message is interpreted “like a movie in my mind’s eye”, Viera explains, but she says that messages differ in form among different psychic mediums.

Viera was raised in a Catholic family with a clairvoyant mother. Growing up in a household where spirituality was very important and weekly séances were held, it is no surprise that Viera places such importance on matters of the spirit.

It is this upbringing that helps her “understand the cosmic laws”. Viera says that many religious people do not regard what she does as legitimate practice and react both fearfully and angrily.

In March, Viera was interviewed on Kowie FM radio. During the broadcast many religious people expressed antagonistic opinions through emails and SMSes.

Rev Andrew Hunter, of St Michael and St George Cathedral says one should be careful. “I would be very sceptical and cautious of people making that claim,” he says, regarding those claiming to communicate with the dead.

Hunter says that he has seen people who sought the help of those claiming to communicate with spirits and it has had destructive results.

When asked what Viera would say to those demanding proof for a clairvoyant’s claims, her answer is that she has given messages to clients that were impossible for her to know, without the spiritual guide telling her from the other side.

She says it’s about being in tune with the universe. Viera helps people “tap into their own guidance and intuition” .
