Organised by the Albany Museum’s Mobile Museum Services as part of the 67 minutes mandate to help communities in need, the event took place at Wilson’s Party Primary School and included learners from Martindale Farm School.
The two schools were among five benefitting from donations collected by generous Grahamstonians at the museum this year.
Wilson’s Party Principal, Sindiswa Sijadu said that farm schools are being neglected by the government in terms of maintenance and resources.
Martindale Farm School principal Nonam Mcekana, added that in a community where alcoholism
among parents and poor nutrition are problematic, the celebration was like a second Christmas for learners.
“Because when they go back home, they’re going to meet challenges,” she said. With tangible excitement, learners and their parents received clothes, stationery, books flags and water bottles donated by Grahamstown residents, NGOs and the museum staff.
Local businesses including UPB Booksellers, Pick n Pay, City Fashions and Kodak also made noteworthy contributions.
Mobile Museum Co-ordinator, Nozipho Madinda, who led the project, said there were many more donations than last year, and thanked sponsors for their kindness.
The donation drive was initiated last year by museum director Bongani Mgijima and has become an annual event.
Carlisle Bridge Farm School, Zintle Primary School and Manley Flats Mission School also benefitted from the project.
