    PJ 1sts win rugby derby

    Hoërskool PJ Olivier and Port Alfred High School held their annual derby day over the past weekend. This year it was PJ’s turn to host Port Alfred in what is always a competitive weekend contested in good spirit.
     

    Hoërskool PJ Olivier and Port Alfred High School held their annual derby day over the past weekend. This year it was PJ’s turn to host Port Alfred in what is always a competitive weekend contested in good spirit.
     

    On Friday, the two tennis teams met, and then on the Saturday it was time for the senior girls hockey, junior and senior netball matches and junior and senior rugby games.

    In the boys senior tennis matches, PJ lost by 16 games to 20, and the PJ girls lost nine games to 17. The weekend ended with the main rugby clash between the two school’s first teams.

    This was a tightly contested match with PJ Olivier winning 14-7. PJ opened the scoring early in the first half with a penalty by Elandré Human, their captain and flyhalf.

    Midway through the first half, Port Alfred replied with a try from a line-out related move. PJ replied with an unconverted try by lock Jaco Schoeman to end the first half, with PJ leading 8-7.

    PJ held their advantage in the second half and Elandre Human kicked over two more penalties to take the home team to the final score of 14-7.

    In other rugby matches, PJ U9 lost 7-19, U11 won 22-0, U13 won 27-5, U15 drew 10-10. The PJ girls 1st hockey side beat Port Alfred 1sts 5-0. In the netball matches, PJ U10 lost 1-5, U11 won 7-5, U12 won 8-4, U13 won 9-8 and U9 lost 8-2.
