Makana Municipality has been providing the townships of Grahamstown with a quota of black plastic refuse bags for each household, and now Grahamstown West will also enjoy the same privelege.

This was announced by Johan Esterhuizen of Makana Municipality’s Environment, Health and Cleansing department at a recent Masihlule Recycling monthly meeting.

“Initially Grahamstown East used to receive one plastic bag per week for one household, now we will start issuing out a bag [containing]about 20 black plastic bags every four months,” he said.

According to Esterhuizen, a leaflet informing residents on how to support the Green City concept will be included in the package.

Other efforts to adopt the Green City concept include notices which will be included in the monthly electricity bill asking residents to participate in the two bag recycling system.

The system was introduced by the municipality last year and makes it easy for Grahamstown residents to recycle their rubbish, alleviating the pressure on landfills.

The leaflet also urges residents to use the money usually spent on black plastic bags on buying clear or orange bags for recycling.

Esterhuizen says that soon a Masihlule Recycling truck will be organised to collect the clear or orange bags of recyclable materials on the same day that the municipal truck collects the black plastic bags.

This will create a more organised and efficient system of collecting the recyclables which are processed at  the Masihlule Recycling plant located on the dumpsite.
