The Port Alfred River and Ski Boat Club hosted a river fishing competition recently, where the anglers  enjoyed one of the warmest evenings for a while.

“The atmosphere on the river and at the prize-giving was warm and friendly as anglers told their stories about the night’s activities and gave each other tips on where to try next competition,” said organiser Bruce Gie.

Although the evening was warm, Gie said the river water was cold, resulting in the fish not feeding. Carol Mitchley was the first woman to weigh a prize winning fish in the club’s competitions for the year so far.

David Drennan weighed in with the heaviest bag and also took over first position for the year’s standings. Eleven fish were weighed with a total weight of 13.908 kilograms.

Gie said the competition was well supported with anglers coming from Port Elizabeth, East London and Cathcart.

In total 13 anglers participated, with participants, families and friends also attending the prize-giving and breakfast.

Results from the river competition are as follows: Dave Drennan Spotty 2.029kgs, Spotty 1.951kgs, Spotty 1.807kgs with a total weight of 5.787kgs, winning him the heaviest bag.

Second in the heaviest bag was Andrew Kean with his Spotty 1.120kgs, Spotty 1.039kgs and Spotty 0.878kgs (3.037kgs total weight).

Bruce Gie weighed in with the heaviest Elf at 0.548kgs. Carol Mitchley won first prize for the heaviest mullet, which weighed 0.626kgs.

The weekend’s competition was sponsored by Pick ’n Pay, Vintage Liquors, Aerosat, Cyril Riddin and John Gie. The standings for the full year so far are as follows:
    1. Dave Drennan 24.180
    2. Bruce Gie 23.398
    3. Dave Kemp 10.891
    4. Patric du Preez 5.717
    5. Dalton Phillips 5.336
    6. Leo du Preez 4.984
    7. Wayne Barnard 3.333
    8. Mark Burgess 3.256
    9. Rainer Ruess 3.247
    10. Andrew Kean 3.037
    11. Rico van Niekerk 2.079

    14. Neil Crouse 0.681
    15. Carol Mitchley 0.626
    16. Cullen Willows 0.530
The club still has five competitions taking place throughout the year, with the competition still wide open for regular participants.

The club’s next competition is on 7 August 2010, and is open to anyone. The entry fee is R50 which includes breakfast. “We are always looking for more people to take part in these competitions.

I would like to see more ladies and juniors taking place in the competitions,” said Gie. Entries, which close at 11am on 7 August, are taken at Kingsley Tyres in Port Alfred, or phone them on 046 624 3325.
