Local schoolboy referee Sindile Ngcese was one of 75 rugby referees from all over the Eastern Province whose sponsored referee uniforms were handed over recently by Algoa FM and Puma.

The referees hail from Eastern Province, Border and the South Western District region – incorporated for the first time this year.

“This is the third year that Algoa FM has been proud to sponsor these kits, and to support local sportsmen,” says Algoa FM managing director, Dave Tiltmann.

Frans Muller, the chairman of referees for EP Rugby, says the kits make a huge difference to the confidence and presentation of the refs.

“The referees at first league games always look extremely neat and professional. It also encourages the men to work hard at becoming first league refs so that they can wear the uniforms.”

EP Rugby does referee grading twice a year and aspiring referees can work their way up from provincial referees to first league refs. “The sponsorship from Algoa FM and Puma is highly appreciated,” says Muller.
