THE Makana Brick Grocott’s Mail Cycle Tour is back! THE Makana Brick Grocott’s Mail Cycle Tour is back! In case you were wondering what had happened to Grahamstown’s very own cycle tour, after a few years of cold, miserable (not to mention windy!) weather, the decision was taken to opt for sunnier climes, moving the race towards the end of the year.

This year’s race, which will still be hosted by the Grahamstown Round Table and Rhodes University Cycling Club, will take place on Sunday 19 September, just 12 weeks away.

The race will once again consist of the 80.4km main event, a 34km as well as a 10km fun ride. Although that might sound like it’s ages away, time flies a lot faster than you think, particularly when you spend your winter Sunday mornings curled up in bed rather than out on the road.

Now is the time to dust off the cleats, pull on some layers and start setting goals before the big day whether it’s finishing your first race, achieving a personal best or even becoming the first local cyclist to win the event.

To help you on your way, Grocotts Mail will publish articles relating to training techniques, nutrition and bike handling skills.

Grocott’s will also be publishing a seven-week performance programme that will cater for all levels, to guide you in your training for the weeks leading up to the event.

These programmes and tips will be supplied by Rhodes Cycling Club. However, to make the most of this programme, it is necessary to put in some mileage in the interim, making sure that you tackle the last few weeks of preparation with some training already under the belt, even if that is just one or two rides per week.
