Giving the Arts Festival a local flavour

Had you been driving down African Street last Thursday evening, you might have been forgiven for thinking that the estate agency business had boomed to the point of requiring night shifts.

Had you been driving down African Street last Thursday evening, you might have been forgiven for thinking that the estate agency business had boomed to the point of requiring night shifts.

There was in fact another reason for the buzz at the Pam Golding offices. A number of the who’s who of Grahamstown were gathered, not for a game of house-swopping but for the cocktail party launch of a Festival art exhibition that features a group of talented local artists.

Daphne Timm of Pam Golding Properties had generously agreed to make their offi ce space available to host this exhibition in order to support artists from the local community.

Spread across the different rooms of these attractive premises, the oil paintings being exhibited are by  Justine Weeks, Vanessa Barr, Helen Gainsford and Heidi Cuppleditch, with sculptures by Mike Weeks.

Janet Ranson from Cape Town is showing multimedia sketches on paper and board, while Rhodes students Mark Farmer and Russel Bruns have co-ordinated a selection of student work: handprinted photographs, etchings, charcoal drawings and some extraordinarily large oil paintings.

The quality is impressive and with such a wide range of works on show there should be something to suit most tastes.

It was no surprise that by the end of the opening night several of the paintings were already sporting red dots.

The artists are hoping that the central location of this venue will bring lots of feet through the door, and perhaps an equally convenient aspect is that locals can simply say, “Have you seen the art exhibition next door to Pirates?”
