Up and coming musician singer-songwriter Meri Kenaz will be performing songs from her debut album as well as new tracks from her latest single at the 2010 National Arts Festival.

Born in Pretoria and raised in Uitenhage, Kenaz became interested in music from a young age and was taught to play the guitar by her mother.

Kenaz’s first album, In a Moment was released in 2008 and was well received by audiences. Her latest single, Branches, has followed suit.

Her music has been compared with the internationally acclaimed Canadian star Alanis Morissette, as well as Ani di Franco and Leslie Rae Dowling of South Africa.

This will be her first performance at the Arts Festival after which she will be touring in Port Elizabeth and Jeffrey’s Bay.

Kenaz’s music cannot be characterised into any specific genre, but on her website she describes her music as “soul-folk” referring to her music as her personal diary.

She has been described as a “blindingly fascinating singer-songwriter” by Gisele Turner from Independent News and Media.

Kenaz has shared the stage with South African musicians EJ Von Lyrik and Albert Frost and has also toured with internationally renowned blues musician Dan Patlansky.

To begin with, she was performing in bars and restaurants in Port Elizabeth as well as working as a radio presenter for  Bay FM.

Kenaz is currently on tour and will be performing on the Fringe festival programme. Her show, also called In a Moment, opens on 21 June.
