Hats, an acclaimed production by director Pieter Bosch Botha, follows the journey of two friends, Buddy and
Pal, along with the hats that changed their lives.

Botha drew his inspiration for the show from the death of his mother, using Hats to tell a story about dealing with the loss of a close friend or family member.

He has also described it as therapeutic and as “a creative outlet for unfinished business”. The show is an exciting combination of choreography, incorporating movement and mime with visually thrilling  special effects. This excludes all dialogue, so the story can be shared across all languages and cultures.

Botha has been involved with several major productions, including Dames en Here directed by Lizz Meiring and guest roles in several SABC2 sitcoms.

He has also taken an active role in several stage productions, directing acclaimed hits such as James and the Giant Peach, Madiba Magic and Noises Off.

his latest was brought to life through a talented creative team consisting of Avril Cummins as assistant director and Richard Antrobus as assistant choreographer.

The role of Buddy will be played by Antrobus, who completed his Drama Masters in  Contemporary Performance at Rhodes University.

Pal will be performed by Tristan Jacobs who also graduated from Rhodes University with Honours in Drama. The performers were chosen on account of their talent, physical versatility and ability to communicate without dialogue.

Hats will be on show during the National Arts Festival from 20 June to 4 July at Hoerskool PJ Olivier. Tickets are on sale at the door and via Computicket at www.computicket.com.

Botha says, “I am extremely excited, a little nervous, sometimes even a little nauseous, but it’s all in the name of the game.”
