At lunchtime on Monday a Coca-Cola delivery truck began spewing diesel all over upper Somerset Street and had to swiftly redirect onto the side of the road for safety.
The driver of the Coca-Cola delivery vehicle had just turned the corner alongside PJ Olivier High School into Somerset Street when an oncoming car nearly drove straight into him.
At lunchtime on Monday a Coca-Cola delivery truck began spewing diesel all over upper Somerset Street and had to swiftly redirect onto the side of the road for safety.
The driver of the Coca-Cola delivery vehicle had just turned the corner alongside PJ Olivier High School into Somerset Street when an oncoming car nearly drove straight into him.
Apparently the other driver was trying to turn the corner even though the truck was already visibly coming around the bend.
The truck driver had to swerve and missed the car, but the sharp turn forced a pointed edge of metal to puncture the fuel tank.
There had been no actual collision so the other driver left the scene, but soon after the truck had turned the corner the driver noticed that diesel was gushing out the side.
He then made a fast decision and pulled over to the side of the road before all the diesel escaped from the gaping hole in the fuel tank.
The driver had to wait for a repairman to arrive from Port Elizabeth to replace the broken tank. The Makana Municipality Fire Department were notified and spread sand and sawdust over the road to absorb the diesel that was covering the 20 metre stretch to prevent it from endangering other vehicles.
