When soccer becomes a culinary experience

Graeme College Foundation Phase hosted a soccer supper last week, where soccer blended with tasty traditional dishes from five participating countries in the Fifa Soccer World Cup.

Graeme College Foundation Phase hosted a soccer supper last week, where soccer blended with tasty traditional dishes from five participating countries in the Fifa Soccer World Cup.

With interactive refereeing from Ryan Pieterson and Craig Holman, the enthusiastic Grade 1 to 7 boys got a first hand experience with the sport as they teamed up and played against  each other in an exciting and experimental soccer show.

The boys showed great interest in the sport with a majority visibly behind Bafana. After the games, the parents, learners and teachers were escorted to the Graemian Centre where all were treated to special Greek, Mexican, French, Italian and South African traditional food.

From Greek vegetarian souvlaki with tzatziki, creamy Italian pasta, Mexican nachos and French crêpes to South African roosterkoek, samp, stew and isigwamba, the soccer supper served its purpose of satiating the most active of appetites.

According to Glynis Suttie, a Grade 2 teacher and the Foundation Phase Head, the point is to fill both the pupils and parents with the World Cup spirit.

Not only should South Africans familiarise themselves with the footballing cultures of different nations but also the diverse lifestyles that the country will witness with the influx of visitors.
