A rec ord crowd of 22 000 flocked to the Absa Kirkwood Wildlife Festival on Saturday, with perfect weather drawing streams of visitors from Nelson Mandela Bay throughout the day.

This brought the total for the weekend to a record 38 000  up from last year’s 35 000, according to festival director Jennifer Honsbein.

The annual Kirkwood Wildlife auction was the best in three years, will a turnover of R11.8-million, according to organiser Johan Swart.

A buffalo cow and her heifer calf from the Addo Elephant National Park went for the highest price – R500 000. “This is a tribute to the quality of the animals that were put on auction by the Addo Elephant National Park, as well as National Parks and other top breeders.

“We achieved these prices despite a string of other auctions in the province before ours. The Kirkwood Wildlife Game Auction is recognised as having some of the best quality game in the country, and attracts buyers from neighbouring states as well,” he says.
