TWO top Grahamstown women runners have been included in the Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) half-marathon team for the South African Half Marathon Championships.

Frith van der Merwe and Terri-Lynn Penney, both members of Run/Walk For Life Athletics Club, have been named as part of the EPA team, after both running superb races at the EP half marathon champs.

Penney was the fourth woman to cross the finish line at the Andre van Coller Memorial 21km road race which was also the EP 21km champs. She finished in one hour 28 minutes 44 seconds.

Van der Merwe, who celebrated 21 years of holding the Comrades down record after the Comrades Marathon on Sunday, was the sixth woman home at the 21km champs and was also first veteran woman home in 1:30:50.

Penney is one of four women making up the EP senior women’s team, while Van der Merwe is one of two in the EP veteran (40 to 49) women’s side.

The EP team is made up of 39  runners, ranging from juniors to the 60 plus age category. Also making the EP team from Grahamstown is Thembinkosi Mdyogolo from the PE based Nedbank Running Club who is in the men’s 40 to 49 age category.

The Matha Series  incorporating the SA Half Marathon Championships takes place in Port Elizabeth on 24 July.
