Nathaniel Nyaluza Secondary pupils took to the streets on Thursday to show their frustration about not having a mathematics teacher at the school.

Refusing to attend classes, the angry learners marched while singing and shouting their grievances. Spokesperson for the provincial Department of Education, Loyiso Pulumani is concerned about finding a new teacher immediately.

“We are urgently looking for a new maths teacher, but at the moment we can’t find one. The educational development officer is trying to get hold of one from our national database,” he said.

This will not be an easy task, according to Pulumani. “Maths and science teachers are very scarce in rural areas because no one wants to teach in those areas, so it is definitely going to be a challenge for us to find someone quickly.”

As challenging as the task may be,  Pulumani wants this to be resolved as soon as possible so that classes can resume as normal.

“At this moment the school principal and  the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) are meeting where they will be discussing all their options and  finding a way forward, and hopefully the end of that meeting will see a solution to this problem,” said Pulumani.

With exams around the corner Pulumani hopes the pupils will return to classes while the discussions continue.

“Maths and science are the critical subjects. It is a real shame this has happened now and I really hope more crucial time isn’t wasted.”
