Parents of learners at Hoërskool PJ Olivier are trying to raise funds to pay for the Grade 12 rugby, netball and hockey tour to Namibia in June.

Although the school has done some fundraising to try and keep costs low, some parents are selling food and holding discos to try and pay the R7 500 needed for each learner to go on the tour.

The school is holding fundraising events such as an auction last Saturday in which R11 000 was raised. The school also has some sponsors.

Jacintha Sphere is organising a gospel show to raise funds for her son, who plays first team rugby. Sphere’s friend, Prudence Perrins, is helping Sphere by hosting and performing the show.

“It’s very generous of Prudence. She’s setting a good example for us all. She is in a wheelchair and her daughter died last year but she is still going strong and is still prepared to help others.”

Sphere said that sports were her son’s number one priority. “I’d really like the community to support me. We never had opportunities to go on tours; I’d really like my son to go.

We must support youngsters so they can fulfil their dreams.” The gospel show will feature performances from Perrins, Gordon Fourie, a gospel singer from King William’s Town and Thomas Jacob’s band.

It will be held on 30 May at the Recreation Hall in Albany Road at 7pm. Tickets cost R30 each. For more information contact Jacintha Sphere on 079 257 2407. PJ Olivier will also hold another auction on 20 May at 7pm at the Old Boy’s Club.
