The Rhodes University Soccer Club started the season in the University Sports South Africa (USS A) Eastern Cape Football league on a mild note, having to play three matches in one day.

The matches were played at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth. Rhodes men’s first match was against Walter Sisulu University – Ibika and easily won 2-0.

With spirits very high after this win the team then faced Fort Hare –East London an hour later. Unfortunately the team in purple could not emulate their style of play  from the first match and went down 1-0.

Rhodes’ third and final match of the day was against Fort Cox  College. With Rhodes players showing signs of fatigue, Fort Cox capitalised on this and scored two early goals.

However, in the second half Rhodes dug deep and came back to level the match 2-2 at the final whistle. The Rhodes women only played one match and easily beat Walter Sisulu – Ibika 2-0.

The next fixtures will be held at Rhodes University on Sunday where Rhodes will face Walter Sisulu University – Umthatha in the first match at 10am, before facing Fort Hare – Alice in the second match at 1.50pm.
